Bod And The Apple

Ivan Pope:
Now, along comes Police Constable Copper. "Hullo, hullo," says P.C. Copper. "What are you all waiting here for?"
P.C. Copper represents authority. Above the postman, the farmer and even Aunt Flo he carries the authority of the state. He wears a helmet and carries a notebook. He has the power to issue edicts that cannot be challenged. Note how angelic Bod is looking. He wont' give P. C. Copper the finger. Bod instinctively knows that this personage is both security and danger in one.
"An APPLE?" says P.C. Copper.
This is the only shouting in the book. Why does P.C. Copper shout at Farmer Barleymow, who has only politely answered his question? Because the notion of art, of practice undertaken for no reason apart from love of the concept, is anathema to the state. And P.C. Copper is a small man with a badge.
